Guangcai porcelain art has been a staple of artistic expression in Chinese culture since the Ming dynasty, and it’s receiving a new life with an initiative by the K11 Craft & Guild Foundation. In partnership with Ruinart, the KCG is launching 100 Ruinart Blanc de Blancs magnums in Second Skins painted in a Guangcai style, with depictions of elegant peony blossoms, regarded as “the King of Flowers” by poets since the Tang dynasty.
The project aims to reinvigorate a dwindling population of Chinese artisans practising the 300-year-old Canton tradition. The Second Skins are an interesting take too: made from thermoformed paper, they reduce the carbon footprint over a gift box by 60 per cent.
Of course, if you’re looking to drink the contents, be assured they’re the signature Blanc de Blancs: 100 per cent chardonnay, sourced mostly Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, and that lovely lean astringency backed with some creaminess. Cheers!
The Ruinart x Guangcai Limited Edition bottles will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis at the Artisan Lounge of K11 Musea from 1 December.
