It’s that time of the year again—the latest Michelin Guide for Hong Kong and Macau is here.
A total of 79 restaurants in Hong Kong and 16 in Macau are honoured with Michelin stars in the 2024 edition of the global gastronomic guide, with a total of seven eateries gaining their first Michelin star and two restaurants gaining additional stars. Hong Kong and Macau stalwarts including Amber, 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo—Bombana, and L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon continue to retain their starred excellence, while a small number of establishments have been presented with further honours this year, namely Noi and The Huaiyang Garden.
Now in its 16th edition for Hong Kong and Macau, the Michelin Guide has recognised the most outstanding dining experiences in the culinary world since first launching in 1900.
“Hong Kong is a melting pot that embraces diverse talent, with chefs from around the world returning to their hometowns, and foreign chefs bringing their specialties and know-how to the industry. Meanwhile, Macau is experiencing a resurgence, with newcomers being recognised for their quality cooking. Despite some economic challenges, and as reflected by the promotion of two restaurants to two Michelin stars, both cities’ culinary scenes are making positive progress, fostering a healthy and vibrant F&B industry,” says Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide. “Our inspection team is thrilled with the diverse selection, particularly the emphasis on local cuisine in the Bib Gourmand category, which was announced last week, where we uncover hidden gems and exciting innovations. We proudly reveal the full selection for the year, featuring three special awards, including the Young Chef Award, Sommelier Award, and Service Award.”
In addition to one Michelin star, Feuille also achieved the Michelin Green Star for its continued efforts in championing sustainable and green dining as well as combatting food waste; the plant-driven French restaurant joins an enviable podium among cohorts Amber, Roganic, and Mora, as well as IFTM Educational Restaurant, in an exclusive category reserved for establishments who distinguish themselves through ethical and environmentally conscious culinary practices.
Notably, Racines has received its first Michelin star, only a few months after celebrating its first anniversary. Helmed by Adrien Castillo and Romain Dupeyre, the restaurant’s seasonal tasting menus present an exploration of Southern French culinary roots and nostalgic flavours. Other restaurants honoured with their first Michelin star include Cristal Room by Anne-Sophie Pic, Mora, and Rosewood Hong Kong’s The Legacy House in Hong Kong. In Macau, Chef Tam’s Seasons and Sushi Kinetsu have also received one Michelin star.
Following in last year’s footsteps, the newly introduced Michelin Guide Sommelier, Service, and Young Chef award categories continue to recognise talent and achievements in the dining space outside of the kitchen. In the 2024 edition of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau, honours are bestowed upon Shinya Goshima of Godenya to celebrate his passion for sake and thorough expertise in the field, Lydia Yung of The Legacy House at Rosewood Hong Kong for her outstanding contribution to hospitality and her dedication to the guest experience, and rising chef Choi Ming-fai of Mora for his remarkable skills in the kitchen.
