Steeped in history and tradition since its inception in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail is the family-owned independent bottler that has become synonymous with the meticulous art of whisky maturation and single malt excellence. At the helm of this illustrious legacy stands Richard Urquhart, the sales director of Gordon & MacPhail and a proud member of the fourth generation of the Urquhart family, which has deftly navigated the evolving landscape of whisky production while remaining steadfastly true to its Scottish roots.

As we sit down with Urquhart in the vibrant heart at Restaurant Petrus, mere minutes before an exclusive RR1 Hong Kong dinner with the brand and an exclusive guest list made up of RR1 Hong Kong members, he exudes a calm passion that is palpable. His journey with Gordon & MacPhail began at the tender age of 14, working in various roles that have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the whisky-making process. From crafting boxes to engaging in management training, Urquhart’s hands-on experience has equipped him with a unique perspective on the business and its heritage. “I’ve worked in every part of the business,” he says, reflecting on his formative years, “and this deep connection to every aspect of the company fuels my commitment to upholding its values.”

Urquhart’s role today is multifaceted, encompassing global sales and strategic direction, yet he remains deeply attuned to the ethos of Gordon & MacPhail: a commitment to producing exceptional single malt whiskies that stand the test of time. “What defines us is our unwavering dedication to quality,” he explains. “We were pioneers in the world of single malt whisky when most of the industry was focused on blending. My great-grandfather and grandfather had the foresight to lay down casks for future generations, a decision that has allowed us to offer some of the oldest and rarest whiskies available today.”

Gordon & MacPhail’s philosophy revolves around maturing whisky to its fullest potential, an art that requires both patience and expertise. Urquhart elaborates on the intricate process: “We carefully select the types of casks we use, whether sherry butts or hogsheads, ensuring that each whisky achieves the right balance and maturity.” Meticulous attention to detail is the cornerstone of the Gordon & MacPhail approach, and has garnered the company accolades from whisky connoisseurs worldwide, particularly with the recent release of the 85-year-old Glenlivet single malt, which has been lauded for its exceptional quality.

As we delve deeper into the conversation, Urquhart highlights the importance of sustainability in the luxury spirits industry. “We recognise our responsibility to the environment,” he asserts. Gordon & MacPhail has committed to sustainable practices, aligning with the Scotch Whisky Association’s regulations and investing in initiatives aimed at preserving natural resources. Its partnership with American Forests, which includes auctioning a decanter from the 85-year-old release to support reforestation efforts, exemplifies the company’s dedication to giving back. “It’s essential that we not only create extraordinary products but also ensure that future generations can enjoy them,” Urquhart shares, underscoring Gordon & MacPhail’s holistic approach to luxury.

Our conversation naturally shifts towards the future of Gordon & MacPhail. Urquhart teases upcoming projects that promise to surprise whisky enthusiasts, including the return of some beloved older labels. “We aim to tell our story through every bottle we release,” he explains, reflecting on the brand’s commitment to innovation while respecting its storied past. Its ethos—showcasing the finest expressions of whisky craftsmanship that embody both heritage and modernity—resonates deeply around the world.

In an industry often tempted by market trends and corporate partnerships, Urquhart reaffirms the importance of family ownership. “We’ve always wanted to retain that family connection,” he states confidently, and the Urquhart family’s direct lineage from founder James Urquhart serves as a steadfast reminder of the values that have shaped the company. “It’s about passing on a legacy in a stronger position for the next generation,” he adds, illustrating a commitment to not just the whisky but to the family’s heritage as a whole.

As we discuss the luxury of whisky, Urquhart reflects on what this term means to him. “Luxury is something that is earned over time,” he states thoughtfully. “It’s about doing the right things consistently, allowing your customers to recognise and appreciate that commitment.” His perspective is integral to the Gordon & MacPhail identity, where every drop of whisky encapsulates decades of expertise, patience, and passion. “It’s a privilege to share these extraordinary whiskies with people all around the world,” he says, “and the best part of the job? I get to travel the world and share a whisky with it.” And with that, Urquhart carries the enduring spirit of a family dedicated to excellence.
