In the world of haute joaillerie, few names resonate with the same level of artistic depth and cultural fusion as Anna Hu. For years, Robb Report Hong Kong has covered the prolific jewellery designer’s stellar creations that often draw inspiration from great art, history, flora, and fauna, taking note of her multi-hyphenate pedigree. (Not many other concert cellists have morphed into global high-jewellery artisans, after all.)

Hu recently showcased her latest collection during the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week for the autumn-winter 2024/2025 season, captivating the audience with 10 exquisite pieces that embody the essence of East meets West. Her latest curation draws on two themes that have been integral to her design philosophy since the inception of her brand in 2007: the butterfly and the intricate beauty of nature displayed through flowers of extraordinary colouration.

When in town, Hu booked out a suite at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong for private viewing and sale only, eschewing traditional brick-and-mortar stores. We at Robb Report Hong Kong were privy to the dazzlers among a forest of flora.

Hu’s designs are not merely adornments; they are narratives woven from threads of historical significance and personal inspiration. In fact, the butterfly, which translates to “hu” in Mandarin Chinese, represents transformation and beauty, while the flora and fauna motifs pay homage to the rich tapestry of traditional Chinese art. Each piece reveals a meticulous craftsmanship, realised in the finest Parisian high-jewellery workshops, where the union of artisan techniques and innovative materials takes centre stage.

Dance of Dunhuang brooch.

One standout creation from the collection is the Dance of Dunhuang brooch, a breathtaking piece crafted in titanium and adorned with an array of precious stones, including natural pearls and fancy-shaped diamonds. Her brooch is not just a visual feast—it tells a story of cultural exchange. The tulip, a flower that has traversed continents from its origins in the Tien Shan mountains of China to the royal courts of Europe, serves as a poignant symbol of diplomatic friendship, collaboration, and unity. Hu reinterprets the tulip through the lens of the mystical Flying Apsaras (otherworldly celestial beings) as depicted in the ancient murals of the Dunhuang Mogao caves. This connection between the past and present is both striking and poetic, illustrating Hu’s ability to blend history with contemporary artistry.

Enchanted Peony brooch.

Equally dazzling is the Enchanted Peony brooch, which embodies the revered status of the peony in Chinese culture. Known as the “King of Flowers,” the peony represents prosperity and good fortune. Hu’s design captures the flower’s essence, showcasing a rare natural blister pearl that mirrors the delicate beauty of a blooming peony. Inspired by the intricate depictions of peonies in Qing-dynasty art, this piece is a testament to Hu’s deep appreciation for nature’s splendour and the timeless elegance of traditional craftsmanship. Precious stones of preternatural colours make up this elegant, dazzling accessory.

Orchid brooch and Orchid diamond earrings.

Delving into the realm of modern technology, Hu introduces the Orchid brooch and Orchid Diamond earrings, which feature innovative “ceramic nano” technology, a cutting-edge method that involves electroplating liquid pigments onto the jewellery, creating a stunning visual effect that enhances the organic beauty of the orchid. Orchids are celebrated in Chinese culture for its refinement and femininity; Hu’s reinterpretation of this noble flower reflects her commitment to celebrating the delicate yet powerful aspects of femininity, showcasing a happy hybrid of modern technology enhancing ancient artefact.

In her Orchid Duet earrings, Hu continues to explore the interplay of light and form, combining titanium and 18-carat gold with briolette-cut diamonds. The ethereal quality of these earrings captures the essence of the flower’s undulating petals, shimmering with energy and allure, encapsulating Hu’s unique approach to design, where each piece is not merely an accessory, but a work of art that resonates with personal and cultural significance.

Anna Hu’s journey as a high-jewellery artist is as remarkable as her creations. With a background in classical music and art history, she approaches her craft with a scholarly dedication that is evident in every facet of her work. After training at prestigious institutions and honing her skills with renowned brands like Van Cleef & Arpels, Hu established her own brand at the age of 30. Her intricate designs have garnered international acclaim, breaking auction records and establishing her as a leading figure in the world of luxury jewellery.

As we go to publish—breaking news—the British Museum has welcomed the Enchanted White Lily bangle, the first contemporary piece by Anna Hu, to grace its permanent collection. This rare creation embodies the delicate balance of Eastern allure and Western silhouette, showcasing a breathtaking 30.48-carat rubellite at its heart, encased in meticulously crafted petals of silver and gold. Hu’s visionary craftsmanship reflects her rich Chinese roots and musical influences, evoking both the timeless elegance of traditional court jewellery and a daring modernity. This acquisition not only enhances the museum’s illustrious collection but also cements Hu’s place in the pantheon of contemporary jewellery artistry, joining rank and file of great artisans and designers to have made a global impact.

In a landscape where luxury often feels impersonal, Anna Hu’s work stands apart. Her designs are infused with cultural stories and personal narratives, making each piece not just a statement of wealth, but a celebration of artistry and heritage. As she continues to explore new horizons in haute joaillerie, one can only anticipate the next chapter in Hu’s inspiring journey, where elegance meets innovation in the most exquisite ways.
