Mercedes-AMG knows that a little restraint doesn’t mean you still can’t have some fun.
The German automaker’s performance sub-brand has just unveiled the GT43, the entry-level version of its flagship coupé. The sleek two-door may only have a four-cylinder mill under the hood, but it still packs plenty of punch.
The main difference between the GT43 and the other members of the GT coupé line is the powertrain. While the versions that debuted last summer, the GT55 and GT63, are powered by V-8 engines, the base model has a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The mill, which is the same found in the SL43 roadster, still has plenty of power. Mercedes claims the mill will deliver 416 hp (43 more than in the convertible) and 369 ft lbs of torque (15 ft lbs more), all of which is sent to the rear wheels by a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. The GT55, meanwhile, produces 469 hp and 516 ft lbs of torque, and the GT63 577 hp and 590 ft lbs of torque. There’s a drop-off, but it’s nowhere near as steep as you’d expect. The car is also a mild-hybrid, meaning it has an F1-derived electric motor integrated into the turbocharger that can temporarily boost output by 14 hp.

The GT43’s relative lack of power hasn’t hurt its performance too much, either. Mercedes says the coupé can rocket from zero to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 176 mph. The GT55 can hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and tops out at 186 mph, while the GT63 hits 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and tops out at 196 mph. Again, there’s a difference, but not enough that anyone should be put off by the GT43.
The base model also looks slightly different than its more brutish siblings. It has a smoother shape that’s less aggressive. The front fascia, in particular, has a less imposing grille and softer lines. The three GT coupés are all clearly related, but the GT43 just looks less intense. Inside, it’s identical to the other models, with two large screens up front. The US version will come with a standard 2+2 seating layout, according to Motor1.com, which will only be an option in Europe.

The GT43 is expected to hit dealerships in the coming months. Pricing has yet to be announced, but you can expect it to cost less than the GT55, which will start at US$136,050 (HK$1 million), and GT63, which will start at US$177,050 (HK$1.3 million).
