To celebrate the launch of Valentino’s winter wear at The Landmark in Hong Kong, the fashion house went for an explosion of hot pink for the cool climate.

The latest autumn/winter collection from the resident Creative Director at Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli, was shot a few months ago with Lewis Hamilton decked neck to toe in hot pink. The famed race car driver’s campaign shots went viral early on (there are no secrets in the age of social media) and suddenly stylish men of note seemed to have embraced the colour without hesitation. It appeared in music videos, on the red carpet, lord, even men in finance suddenly had a tie and lapel in that highlighter hue.

Come September, when the clothes and accessories arrived in Central, the entire store at The Landmark was coated in what’s easily ‘the’ colour of the season. Would the gents of the 852 warmly embrace that bold statement with equal ease?

On cue, the most fashionable young men in town appeared wearing the latest collection without hesitation. In a post-pandemic age (we remain hopeful with that phrase), there are no sartorial rules left to follow, no mandates for men in style. Sneakers to the office? Sweatpants on a zoom call? No tie? Sure. Colours once reserved for the purview of women is spilling over to every gender. Ditch all the dictum set for debonair men of distinction. What the shuck?

Hong Kong’s celebrity guests all turned up in dressed-to-the-nines, stunning the crowd with that shock of spectacular pink and details in black.

Piccioli conceived the new Valentino collection by stripping the palette down to a single hue. Although the pink is rampant in wardrobe and accessories, occasionally you’ll also find total black and total white intermissions in accessories and wardrobe.

Even the house knew it’s a lot to behold; as the press release states, “Pink as a manifestation of the unconscious and a liberation from the need for realism. The accumulation of pink elements in such as to eliminate the visual shock to bring out, together, the unique character of the person.”

Ok then.
