Feeling a little let down by the first crop of street-legal versions of the new Ford Mustang? Don’t worry, Shelby American has what you’re looking for.
The legendary performance shop has just launched the 2024 Super Snake. Its take on the seventh-generation ‘Stang features the typically ridiculous performance bump we’ve come to expect from Shelby, along with a couple of other features sure to appeal to the modern-day muscle-car lovers out there.
Shelby first showed off its first of the S650 Mustang last month. The car is about what we’ve come to expect from the Super Snake, which first launched during the Mustang’s first generation in 1967. It comes with a carbon-fibre body kit that takes the base vehicle’s already muscular design and turns everything up to 11, a bold paint job, racing stripes, and, most importantly of all, a slew of performance upgrades.
This time around, the biggest upgrade is a 3.0-litre Whipple supercharger. The Mustang GT’s 5.0-litre Coyote V-8 is already a potent mill capable of producing 486 hp and 418 ft lbs of torque. The addition of the supercharger provides a boost you’ll be able to feel every time you put your foot on the accelerator. Shelby claims the upgraded setup will pump out up to 830 hp. That’s more than Ford’s insane, track-only Mustang GTD.
The Super Snake’s beastly powertrain comes mated to either a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Other performance features include a redesigned Shelby suspension, a Borla exhaust, and a new cooling system. The car also rides on 20-inch forged magnesium alloy wheels and comes with better brakes.
Anyone interested in the new Super Snake has a number of options to take into account, all of which can be viewed on the car’s configurator page. In addition to the transmission options, there is also body style (coupé or convertible), paint colour (Atlas Blue, Iconic Silver, Oxford White, Race Red, Rapid Red Metallic, Shadow Black), and stripe colour (satin black, blue, silver, or white). Some people may want more control over the vehicle, but that should be plenty of options for most.
You can order your 2024 Super Snake now through the Shelby website. Pricing begins at US$159,995 (HK$1.25 million) and can go up to US$167,585 (HK$1.31 million), but that includes the base chassis. That’s significantly more than the V-8 Mustang GT’s US$46,980 (HK$367,260), but since the 1960s, Shelby builds have always fetched a significant premium.
