Hong Kong travellers need little convincing to hop on a plane and jet off to Japan.
Pre-pandemic, some two million visitors from Hong Kong made annual trips to the island nation, according to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)—that is roughly 30 percent of the city’s total population. In December 2022 alone, East Asian countries made up 58.5 percent of arrivals into Japan. It’s little wonder then that international brands are vying for a share in this popular market, and Dorchester Collection is the latest looking to make its mark on the luxury hotel landscape.
With nine hotels in its portfolio and another soon to open in late 2023, the owner-operator of such iconic properties as The Dorchester and Plaza Athénée is poised to bring its unique legacy of traditional European splendour to Tokyo in 2028, where it will manage the hotel within the upcoming Torch Tower, set to be the tallest skyscraper in the country upon completion.
Several high floors in the 67-floor building will be reserved for the hospitality group. From its position near Tokyo Station, Torch Tower will overlook the city centre, Tokyo Bay, and Mount Fuji. While the opening of the new property is still far on the horizon, followers of Dorchester Collection should come to expect the same grand and timeless character that the brand is known for.
Christopher Cowdray, chief executive offer of Dorchester Collection, believes the collaboration with Mitsubishi Estate and Tokyo Century Corporation “will become a beacon for Japan’s ultra-luxury hotel landscape and set new benchmarks. Tokyo has long been an integral part of our growth strategy given it is a gateway to Asia and its global significance.”
Despite the wait, the hotel should be something stunning to behold. Watch this space.
